Mission of the Exhibition
The ASP Museum Project exists to elevate and preserve the work of exceptional photographic artists through curated, museum-quality exhibitions that reflect the creative excellence, diversity, and technical mastery of ASP members.
honoring the craft
In a world saturated with disposable imagery, this exhibition cuts through the noise. It offers a rare platform for serious photographic artists to be seen, not just by their peers, but by the public, institutions, and collectors. The Museum Project gives ASP members the opportunity to step beyond competitions and publications—to present their work as fine art, in spaces where it demands and deserves full attention.
An Enduring Legacy
This project is more than an exhibit. It’s a statement of what contemporary photographic artistry can be. It positions ASP not just as a professional society, but as a cultural contributor—one that shapes the conversation around photographic art today. Through this exhibition, ASP members are recognized not just as skilled image-makers, but as artists with something meaningful to say.
The Maker's Muse:
Contemporary Photographic Art
60 works of art
36 artists exhibited
This collection of photographic art, created by member artists of the American Society of Photographers, are on view in the exhibition “The Maker’s Muse: Contemporary Photographic Art from the Artists of the American Society of Photographers”.
Following a Call for Entries in 2020 for “The Maker’s Muse” exhibition, 119 images created by 42 artists were selected. The inaugural exhibition was held in Grapevine, Texas, and the exhibition is now on view in Houston, Texas. 36 artists are represented by 60 works of art.
The Exhibition
In the digital era, “The Maker’s Muse” emphasizes that impact goes beyond an immediate reaction to a fleeting image, and is deepened by a reflective process obtained through time spent viewing the printed image. Additionally, consideration can be given to the techniques employed by each individual artist, who start with the same tool, photography, and complete pieces through varying techniques from digital art to applied materials.
Offering up the seed from which so much is grown, the maker’s muse is the touch of inspiration that spurs thought into action. In this collection from the American Society of Photographers, the elusive muse bestows her gifts differently on each artist, and captures the viewer’s imagination, whether by a strike of lightning from a looming thunderhead, an alien birth, or the delicate bow of a flower.

Ethics and Eligibility
To be eligible, a work must have been created by the entrant. This applies to all images in a composite. The entrant certifies that they are the sole creator and copyright owner of the submitted work. Other than printing and display, the image must only be touched by the maker in every aspect, including but not limited to capture, retouching, enhancement, embellishments. The maker may use physical backgrounds painted by another artist if such backgrounds are photographed with the subject. The maker may also use a professional printer and framer, and digital brushes created by another. If two makers have created the image together, both names should be submitted with the entry.
No entry can be created in part or whole using text-to-image prompts that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) image-generating technology software that is intended to create whole images and backgrounds entirely from programmed images. A human must have had creative control over the work’s expression. Images and their elements must be created with traditional elements of authorship. However, non-text-to-image prompted elements (such as Photoshop’s automations like generative expand) may be used in image creation.
Images that are determined to violate the AI statement above will be disqualified.
Images that contain sexually explicit themes, obscene, violent, or other objectionable or inappropriate content, as determined by ASP at its sole discretion, are ineligible for the exhibit.
The entrant has obtained and has access to all necessary releases (model or property) and agrees to hold ASP harmless against all claims and liabilities arising out of any ASP display, publication, promotion, or other use of each image submitted to ASP’s image competition.
For an image in which a person is recognizable, you must be prepared to provide a model release from the subject or, in the case of a minor, the subject’s parent or guardian, to ASP.
Similarly, entrants whose images depict other people’s work (such as sculptures, statues, paintings, and other copyrightable works) must be prepared to provide a release from the rights holder to ASP upon request. When photographing the work of others, it must be as an object in its environment and not a close-up of another person’s creation.
If the entrant is unable to provide all required releases, ASP at its sole discretion reserves the right to disqualify the submission. Images which violate or infringe upon another person’s rights, including but not limited to copyright, are not eligible.
If it is determined that a photographer has used a ghost artist or stock piece in any way, ASP reserves the right to remove the image by immediate disqualification from the salon selection without refund or explanation.
No work accepted into a previous Museum Project collection may be entered. However, should we have a themed call in the future, the committee may consider art that has been accepted in a previous collection.
